finding better quality betta fish
finding better quality betta fish
I've been thinking about adding another betta to my collection, but the ones at our local fish store just don't compare to the ones I see on here and other forums. I'm not set on a specific type or color, just something that stands out. I've seen some really unique ones on here, but they seem to be from breeders or sellers that are out of my budget - I'm not looking to drop $500 on a betta. Can anyone recommend a reputable source in the US where I could find a high-quality betta that won't break the bank?
Re: finding better quality betta fish
I've had good luck finding nice bettas on aquabid.com - they have a variety of US-sourced fish and the prices are pretty reasonable. My personal experience with the site has been great, I've bought three bettas from them and everything went smoothly.
Re: finding better quality betta fish
I've been checking out KeepFishKeeping.com - it's run by the KG Tropicals team, you know, the ones with the YouTube channel. Lisa, the owner, is super into bettas, so they've got a whole room dedicated to them, and she sells them too. They've got photos and videos of each fish on the site, which is really helpful. My tank's still a couple of months away from being ready, but I'm thinking of getting one from Lisa when the time comes.

The Wet Spot Tropical Fish in Portland is also worth checking out - they have a solid reputation, so you can't go wrong with them.

Hello, I'm also looking into getting a healthy and beautiful Betta, but I've come across some concerns. I've read that canvas 'fluxeon' bettas often have thickening scale problems, and 'multicolored' ones can be prone to cysts or tumors, not to mention potential color/pattern changes due to the marble gene. @burglar_4, have you experienced anything like this with your bettas from aquabid.com?
Re: finding better quality betta fish
I'm not familiar with the canvass betta, but I've had good luck with my aquabid purchases - three healthy bettas so far. My multi-colored guy, pictured in my profile, has changed colors over time, but I think that's normal, especially with the marble gene. While it's true that marble gene bettas can shift colors, that doesn't necessarily mean they're unhealthy. Inbreeding can lead to problems, but that depends on the breeder's practices.
Re: finding better quality betta fish
By 'multicolored' they're referring to mixes like galaxy, fancy, nemo, avatar, etc. How long have you had yours, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not familiar with that specific type of multicolored betta. The one I have, which is in my profile picture, has been with me for a year and a half now and is still doing great.velvet8 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:26 pm Hello, I'm also looking into getting a healthy and beautiful Betta, but I've come across some concerns. You can find some nice bettas on Aquabid. Many are from US breeders. Prices vary. I've bought three bettas from there and had good experiences every time.velvet8 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:26 pm Hello, I'm also looking into getting a healthy and beautiful Betta, but I've come across some concerns.
