introducing new tangs to tangs

Post by FableKing »

I'm upgrading from a 90 to a 150 gallon reef tank and I'm excited to stock it with more fish. I currently have a purple tang that somehow survived the great anemone disaster - it got stuck in a pump and wiped out my sailfin, hippo, and naso tangs. Luckily, the purple tang made it through. I'm looking to add more tangs to the new tank and I'd love to hear your suggestions. What order would you recommend introducing them to minimize aggression? I'm hoping I wasn't just lucky the last time they all got along.

I've got some experience with tangs, and purples can be a bit feisty. Adding different species of tang should help keep the peace, though. Maybe hold off on adding any acanthurus till last, just to be safe. If you're moving the purple tang to the new tank, you might get away with adding another zebrasoma at the same time, but I wouldn't count on it. Thing is, with marine stuff, there's no one-size-fits-all solution - every tank's different.

I'm with flynix on this. Adding tangs that are visually distinct from the purple seems like a solid plan. I've had a regal, a lieutenant, and a yellow in my own 90 gallon tank, and they all get along just fine.
