Is a tank feasible?

Post by paulos »

Hi everyone,
I'm getting more into African cichlids and thinking of setting up a large tank for my current fish (tiger barbs, clown loaches, plec, rtbs, etc.) and using my existing 110 litre Juwel tank for a small African cichlid setup.

I've attached a photo of the tank.

It's got 2 pieces of bogwood, centrally located, with a mix of Amazon swords, cabomba, and straight vallis in the background and sides. Dark sand substrate is what I'm using. Is this setup suitable for a small African cichlid tank as it is, or would I need something bigger?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts and comments on this. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm not familiar with the tank, but I'd estimate it's around 30" long. For a Malawi setup, I think it's a bit too small. However, you could create a nice Tanganyika display with some fascinating behaviour.

If you're looking for some suggestions, you could consider a small shell-dwelling species like exLamprologus multifasciatus. They're peaceful, breed easily, and can form a small colony. Alternatively, a pair of Julidochromis dickfeldi would thrive in a stacked rock arrangement at one end of the tank.

For a more open layout, there are some smaller sand-shifters that could work well. You could create a small rockpile in one corner with a few shells and add a species like exLamprologus caudopuntatus. The key is not to overstock with Tanganyikan cichlids. I'd recommend choosing a shell dweller and a rock dweller, and giving each its own area. This approach will be rewarding, and you'll be pleased with the results.

Thanks for the advice Sean, I appreciate your thoughts on the tank, it's actually 32" long, so you were pretty close with your guess.

Hi, I've got a Juwel Rekord 800 too, thinking of making the switch from a community setup to a Tanganyika tank. I see Kiriyama is from Scotland, I'm in Glasgow, what LFS would you recommend for this type of setup?
