Do Bettas need hiding spots

Post by metamorph »

I've been setting up a new tank for my betta and wondering if they really need hiding spots. I've seen mixed opinions online, some say it's crucial, others say they don't care. What's your experience?

From what I've seen, they definitely appreciate having places to chill. My guy loves his little cave and hangs out there most of the day. It's like his safe space, y'know? Without it, he seems kinda stressed, flaring at everything.

Hiding spots are essential for their mental well-being. Bettas are territorial and need areas to retreat when they feel threatened. I recommend live plants like java fern or anubias, or even a small ceramic cave. Just make sure there are no sharp edges.

I agree with craftonix. My betta was always skittish until I added some floating plants and a coconut hide. Now he's way more relaxed. It's like night and day.

Yeah, but some bettas are just weirdos. Mine ignores his hide and chills on top of the filter instead. Still, better to have it and not need it, right?

Mine does the same thing! But I've noticed he uses the hide more when the lights are too bright. Maybe it's about the lighting?

I don't use hides. My betta seems fine without them. But I keep the tank dimly lit and have lots of plants.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'll try adding a couple of hides and see how they react. Appreciate the advice!

That's fair, but plants can kinda act like hides too. If your betta's happy, that's what matters.

Exactly. The goal is to reduce stress. Whether it's a cave, plants, or driftwood, as long as they have options to retreat, you're good. Just avoid overcrowding the tank with too many decorations.
