How to breed aquarium fish

Post by darko »

I've got a pair of Angelfish in my 55 gallon, water's at 80F, pH 6.8. They've been doing the breeding dance but no eggs yet. What am I missing? Tank's got a sponge filter, driftwood, and some Java fern. Feeding them brine shrimp and flakes twice a day.

Angelfish can be picky. You might wanna bump the temp to 82F and add a flat surface like a slate tile for them to lay eggs on. Also, try live foods like blackworms to trigger spawning. Your pH is good, but check nitrates, they should be under 20ppm.

Totally agree with the slate tile suggestion. My pair ignored everything until I added one. Also, dim lighting can help set the mood, weird as that sounds.

Yo, darko, you got any other fish in there? Sometimes tankmates can stress 'em out, even if they're chill usually. My Angels didn't spawn until I moved 'em to a solo tank. Also, how often you doing water changes? Fresh water can mimic rainy season, which gets 'em in the mood.

Breeding Angels is all about patience. I've had pairs take months to finally lay eggs. Keep the water pristine, 25% changes weekly, and maybe try a protein-rich diet. Frozen bloodworms worked for me. Also, make sure the Java fern isn't blocking too much flow, they like gentle currents.

I'm new to this, but my friend bred Angels by lowering the water level a bit and adding almond leaves. Said it made the water softer and darker, which they liked. Maybe worth a shot?

Almond leaves are legit! They release tannins that mimic their natural habitat. Just don't go overboard, or your water'll look like tea.

Has anyone tried using a breeding cone? I've seen some folks swear by 'em for Angels, but others say it's pointless. Curious if it's worth the hassle.

Breeding cones can work, but slate's cheaper and does the same thing. Darko, how old are your fish? Sometimes they're just not mature enough. Younger pairs might take longer to figure it out.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the slate tile and bump the temp. They're about a year old, so should be mature enough. I'll cut back on the tankmates too, see if that helps.
