Gouramis and betta compatibility

I've got a 20 gallon tank with a male betta and was thinking of adding a dwarf gourami. Anyone tried this combo before? Worried about aggression.

Yeah, it's sketchy. Bettas and gouramis are both territorial, especially males. If your tank's got plenty of hiding spots, might work, but I'd keep an eye on 'em.

I tried it once, and my betta was not having it. Chased the gourami nonstop. Had to rehome the gourami. Maybe try a female betta instead?

From my experience, it's risky. Bettas and gouramis are both labyrinth fish, so they compete for surface space. A 20 gallon might not be enough to avoid clashes.

I've had success with a female betta and a honey gourami in a heavily planted 30 gallon. The key is lots of plants and breaking line of sight.

Totally agree. My betta was cool until the gourami started nipping. Had to separate 'em fast.

It's not recommended. Both species can be aggressive, and stress from constant chasing can lead to health issues. Better to choose tankmates that are less likely to clash.

I'd say nope to this idea. Bettas are solo artists, and gouramis ain't much better. Save yourself the hassle and stick to one or the other.

My betta flipped out when I added a gourami. Had to move the gourami to another tank within a day. Not worth the stress for either fish.
