Is this a reasonable price?

Post by novelist »

Found a local seller offering a 55-gallon tank with a Fluval 307 filter, heater, and LED light for $250. Seems like a steal, but I'm new to this. What do you think?

That sounds like a decent deal if everything's in good condition. The Fluval 307 alone retails for around $150 new. Did they mention how old the equipment is?

Yeah, that's a solid price, especially if the tank doesn't have scratches or leaks. I'd check the seals and ask about the heater's age. Old heaters can be sketchy.

I'd say go for it if the tank holds water and the filter runs quietly. LED lights can last years, so that's a bonus. Just make sure to test everything before handing over cash.

Totally agree. Also, ask if they've ever treated the tank with meds. Some residues can linger and mess with your cycle.

Price is fair, but don't skip the inspection. A leaky tank isn't worth the hassle, no matter how cheap.

I'd haggle down to $200 if you can. Sellers often expect some negotiation, especially if they're trying to clear space.

The Fluval 307 is a workhorse. If it's been maintained, that's a great deal. Ask about the filter media—if it's been cleaned with tap water, you might need to replace it.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll check the seals and ask about the heater and filter maintenance before committing.

Make sure the LED light isn't flickering. Cheap LEDs can be a pain to replace if they're built into the hood.
