Treating Ich in Bettas

Post by Dream »

My betta has white spots on its fins and body, and it's been rubbing against the tank decor. I think it's ich. What's the best way to treat it without stressing them out too much? Tank is 5 gallons, heated to 80°F, and has a sponge filter. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.

Yo, ich's a pain but treatable. Bump the temp to 86°F slowly over a day, add aquarium salt (1 tsp per gallon), and do daily water changes. Keep it up for 10 days. The heat speeds up the parasite's life cycle, and the salt messes with it. Just watch your fish for stress.

I've had success with this method too. Also, dim the lights to keep them chill. Less stress helps them fight it off faster.

I'd recommend using a med like Kordon Rid Ich Plus if the salt and heat don't cut it. Follow the dosage exactly and remove any carbon from your filter. It's worked for me in the past when natural methods weren't enough.

How often should I change the water during treatment? Mine's in a 10-gallon with live plants. Don't wanna mess with the cycle too much.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll start with the heat and salt method and keep an eye on them. Appreciate the help!

I've heard some folks use garlic extract to boost their immune system during treatment. Dunno if it's legit, but might be worth a shot if they're not eating much.

Garlic's kinda sketchy, but soaking food in it can help with appetite. Just don't overdo it. Stick to the basics first, heat and salt.

If you're using meds, make sure they're betta-safe. Some can be harsh on their labyrinth organ. Always check the label.

Also, keep an eye on tankmates if you have any. Ich can spread fast, and some fish are more sensitive to treatment than others.
