Ideas for a 50–55-gallon tank

Post by Peachfluff »

I'm setting up a 50–55-gallon tank and need some ideas. I'm thinking about a community setup but not sure which fish would work best. Any suggestions?

A 50–55-gallon tank is a great size for a community setup. You could go with a mix of Tetras, Corydoras, and a centerpiece fish like a Gourami or a pair of Angelfish. Just make sure the water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and nitrates under 20 ppm.

I'd avoid Angelfish if you're planning on smaller fish. They can get aggressive as they grow. Maybe consider a school of Harlequin Rasboras instead. They're chill and look great in a planted tank.

Yep, Rasboras are a solid choice. You could also add some Cherry Barbs for color. They're hardy and won't mess with other fish.

If you're into planted tanks, a school of Cardinal Tetras would pop against green plants. Pair them with some Otocinclus for algae control. Just make sure your tank is cycled before adding them.

I've got a 55-gallon with a mix of Guppies, Neon Tetras, and a few Amano Shrimp. It's been running smooth for months. Just keep up with weekly water changes and you're golden.

Agreed, but I'd skip the Angelfish unless you're experienced. Gouramis are easier to manage and come in cool varieties like Dwarf or Pearl.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm leaning towards Tetras and Corydoras with a Gourami as the centerpiece. Any tips on plants that'll work well with this setup?

For plants, Java Fern and Anubias are bulletproof. They don't need fancy lighting or CO2. If you want something more colorful, try Cryptocoryne Wendtii. Just plant them in a nutrient-rich substrate and they'll thrive.

I'd add some floating plants like Frogbit or Water Lettuce. They help with nitrates and give the tank a natural vibe. Plus, fish love hanging out under them.
