Dechlorinating water safely

Post by fizzle »

What's the safest way to dechlorinate water for a new tank? I've heard mixed things about letting it sit vs using conditioners. My tap water has a strong chlorine smell, so I'm kinda worried about messing up my cycle.

Conditioners are the way to go, especially if your tap has a strong chlorine smell. Letting it sit only works if you're sure there's no chloramine, which doesn't evaporate. I use Seachem Prime because it neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine, and it's super concentrated.

Yep, Prime's the bomb. Also, if you're in a rush, it works almost instantly. No need to wait 24 hours like some folks say. Just dose it, stir, and you're good to go. My fish have never had issues with it.

The chemical approach is more reliable than evaporation. Chloramine persistence varies by municipal treatment. Testing residual chlorine after 24 hours is advisable if you insist on the evaporation method.

Totally agree! Prime's a lifesaver. I've even used it during emergency water changes when my tap was extra sketchy. Just remember to dose correctly, 'cause too much can mess with your biofilter.

If you're worried about cost, API Tap Water Conditioner is a solid alternative. It's cheaper per gallon and does the same job. Just make sure you're measuring accurately, 'cause overdosing can cause issues.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll grab some Prime and test my tap for chloramine just to be safe. Appreciate the help!

Good call on testing. If you do find chloramine, Prime's your best bet. It binds the ammonia released during neutralization, so it's a double win.

Also, if you're using a bucket for water changes, toss in the Prime before adding tap water. That way it's mixing as you fill. Saves time and ensures even distribution.

One more tip, if your water's super chlorinated, consider a pre-filter with activated carbon. It won't replace conditioner, but it'll cut down on the initial load. Just don't rely on it alone, 'cause it wears out fast.
