Newbie aquarium hope
Just set up my first 20 gallon tank with a sponge filter and some Java Fern. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, but my plants look kinda sad. Any tips?

Java Fern can be picky about lighting. What's your setup? Also, are you using any ferts? I had similar issues until I dialed in my light schedule.

Java Ferns don't like being buried in substrate. Make sure the rhizome is exposed. They're slow growers, so patience is key. What's your light intensity and duration?

I've had success with Java Fern in low light. Maybe try moving it to a shaded spot. Also, check for algae on the leaves, that can block light.

Yep, Java Ferns are chill but fussy. Mine took forever to settle in. You gotta give 'em time. How often are you doing water changes?

Lighting is crucial. I run my LEDs at 50% for 6 hours a day. Also, a liquid fertilizer like Seachem Flourish can help. What's your substrate?

Don't stress too much. New tanks take time to balance. My Java Fern looked rough for weeks before it perked up. Just keep an eye on the water params.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try adjusting the light and maybe add some ferts. Appreciate the help!

I'm using sand with root tabs. Works great for my other plants. Maybe I'll cut the light duration and see if that helps.luremaster wrote: ↑Sat Jul 26, 2025 6:43 amLighting is crucial. Sand can be tricky for Java Fern. They prefer to attach to driftwood or rocks. Maybe try tying it to something instead of burying it.
