How to treat Betta fish diseases

Post by fluxx »

My betta's been acting weird lately, fins look clamped and he's not eating much. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Tank's a 5 gallon with a sponge filter, heated to 78. Any ideas what's going on?

Clamped fins and loss of appetite could be stress or early signs of fin rot. Check for any sharp decor that might've torn his fins. Also, how often are you doing water changes? Even with good params, buildup can stress them out.

Sounds like stress or early infection. Try adding Indian almond leaves, they're great for soothing bettas. Also, bump the temp to 80, it'll boost their immune system.

Y'all ever tried aquarium salt? A lil bit can help with fin issues. Just don't overdo it, bettas are sensitive. Also, make sure he's got some hiding spots, stress can mess with 'em bad.

Agreed on the salt, but keep it to 1 tsp per gallon max. And yeah, hiding spots are key. Floating plants like frogbit can help too, gives 'em shade and security.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the almond leaves and bump the temp. I'll check for sharp edges too.

How long's he been like this? Sometimes they just have off days, but if it's been more than a week, might need meds. Kanaplex's worked for me before.

Mine had similar symptoms last month. Turned out to be columnaris. Had to treat with erythromycin. Keep an eye on white patches or fuzzy growth.

Columnaris is nasty stuff. If you see any white patches, act fast. It spreads quick. Also, lower the water level a bit to help him reach the surface easier.

Before jumping to meds, try fasting him for a day or two. Sometimes overfeeding can cause bloating and stress, which looks similar to early disease.
