Danio tankmate suggestions

Post by onyxer »

I've got a 20 gallon tank with a school of Zebra Danios, and I'm looking for some chill tankmates. Any suggestions? The tank's got a sponge filter, sand substrate, and a few Java ferns. Water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.

I've had good luck with Cherry Barbs in my Danio tank. They're pretty laid back and won't mess with your Danios. Just make sure you've got some hiding spots.

White Cloud Mountain Minnows could work. They're hardy and share similar water conditions. My Danios and Minnows school together sometimes, which is kinda cool to watch.

Yep, Cherry Barbs are solid. I'd also throw in some Otocinclus if you've got algae. They're tiny and won't bother anyone.

What about shrimp? I've got some Neocaridina in with my Danios, and they're doing fine. Just keep an eye on the Danios if they're nippy.

I'd avoid anything too slow or long-finned. Danios can be zippy and might stress out slower fish. Stick with active, mid-water swimmers like the Barbs or Minnows mentioned earlier.

Totally agree. My Danios used to chase my Guppies, so I had to move them out.

If you're into bottom dwellers, Pygmy Corydoras could be a good fit. They're small, peaceful, and won't compete for space with your Danios. Just make sure your sand is fine-grained.

I've kept Harlequin Rasboras with Danios for years. They're similar in temperament and water requirements. Plus, the red and silver contrast looks great in a planted tank.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I'm leaning toward Cherry Barbs and maybe some Pygmy Corys. Appreciate the help!
