How to prevent Ich in Betta tanks

Post by Daisy »

I've noticed white spots on my betta's fins and body, and I'm worried it might be ich. What's the best way to treat it and prevent it from spreading? My tank is a 10 gallon with a sponge filter, kept at 78°F, and I do weekly 25% water changes.

First thing, raise the temp to 82°F gradually over a day. Ich can't survive at higher temps. Add aquarium salt at 1 tsp per gallon, but dissolve it first in tank water. Keep an eye on your fish, some bettas are sensitive to salt.

I agree with raising the temp. Also, make sure your water changes are consistent. Ich often pops up when water quality dips. Test for ammonia and nitrites, just to rule out other stressors. What's your substrate like? Bare bottom or planted?

Thanks for the advice. My substrate is sand with a few live plants. I'll test the water today and start raising the temp. Should I also use a medication, or is salt and heat enough?

Salt and heat should do the trick, but if it's stubborn, meds like Ich-X work well. Just be careful with meds if you have shrimp or snails in there. How's your betta acting? Still eating okay?

Gotta say, ich is a pain but it's usually not a death sentence if you catch it early. I've had luck with just heat and salt, no meds. But if your fish is looking rough, meds might cut it. What's your water change routine like?

I'd second this. Consistency is key. Also, avoid stressing your betta during treatment—no tank rearrangements or new tankmates.

Yep, stress is a big factor. I've seen ich flare up after adding new fish or moving tanks. Keep things chill and stable. What kind of heater are you using? Some of the cheaper ones can have temp swings.

Hey, just wanna say you're doing great by catching this early. Ich is super common, and it sounds like you're on top of it. Keep us posted on how your betta's doing, yeah?

I've heard some people use garlic extract to boost their betta's immune system during treatment. Anyone tried that? Not sure if it's just a myth or actually helps.
