How to prevent bacterial infections in Bettas

Post by cutiepie »

My betta's been acting kinda off lately, like he's not as active. I'm worried it might be a bacterial thing. What's the best way to keep him from getting sick? Tank's a 5 gallon, heated to 78, filtered, and I do weekly water changes.

Bacterial infections often stem from poor water quality or stress. Test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Even if params seem fine, small spikes can stress them. Also, avoid overfeeding, as leftover food decays and messes with water quality. A balanced diet and clean tank are key.

Yep, and if you're using tap water, always condition it. Chlorine's a big stressor. I'd also recommend adding Indian almond leaves, they've got antibacterial properties.

Agree with the above. Keep an eye on tankmates too. Even peaceful ones can stress a betta if they're too active or the tank's crowded. My guy got fin rot after I added some tetras, had to separate him.

Regular water changes are crucial, but don't go overboard. Sudden large changes can shock them. I do 20% twice a week in my 10 gallon, and my betta's never had issues. Also, avoid sharp decor that could cause injuries leading to infections.

True! And if you're ever unsure, quarantine new plants or decor before adding them. I've had hitchhiking bacteria wreck a tank before.

I've heard some folks use aquarium salt as a preventative. Not sure if it's legit, but my LFS swears by it. Anyone tried it long-term?

Salt can help, but it's not a cure-all. Too much can mess with their kidneys. I'd stick to clean water and stress reduction first. Maybe add salt only if you see early signs of infection.

My betta got better after I lowered the water level a bit. Less swimming stress, I guess. Also, floating plants helped him feel more secure.

Thanks for all the tips, guys! Gonna test my water again and maybe grab some almond leaves. Appreciate the help.
