Finding the right balance: how much organic matter is too much

Post by Beastie »

I've got a 25-liter tank with a few shrimp and some indostomus fish, and I think the fish are ready to breed based on their behavior and the females' thickness. I'm curious about how to boost infusoria presence in the tank without overloading it with too much organic matter, decomposition, or tannins.

I do really mild water changes, about 10% each week, to keep the shrimp stable, and maybe a top-off once a week due to the recent heatwaves.

Currently, the tank has one piece of cholla wood that's been in there since November, four alder cones, two small moringa leaves, and three small guava leaves - all the leaves were freshly added in June when I moved the tank, and the previous ones fully decomposed. I also have around 15 bamboo tubes that have been in there since February.

At home, I've got oak leaves, beech leaves, and a lotus pod that I could add. I've also got a few leaves in jars with water that have been closed and submerged for months now - I know anaerobic bacteria aren't what we want, but the slime on the leaves could work, and the wet leaves will decompose faster. I could also wash them under tap water first.

I'm planning to go to the store on Sunday, and they'll have more cholla wood and other leaves for sale, so I need to know what to buy and if I should add anything. Should I add some things, and if so, how much, to avoid overdoing it?
