I was advised by my college teacher that a 50-60L aquarium would be suitable for two clown fish, but I'm not entirely sure. What are the essentials I'll need to get started - I'm thinking salt, a heater, filter, and so on.

Good call. Just remember to quarantine any new fish before adding them to your main tank. It's a hassle but worth it to avoid introducing diseases.

A 55-gallon is a great size for a community tank. You could do a mix of tetras, like Cardinals or Rummynose, with some Corydoras for the bottom.
