Is my hen egg-bound or bloated?

Post by quillmaster »

I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. There's a male in a separate tank about 10 feet away, I'm unsure if he's close enough to even trigger her condition from that distance.

Hi @quillmaster, I've got a separate male and female betta, and in my opinion, your female is bloated. The treatment is pretty much the same as for males - you can try giving her some peas.

I think peas is for constipation, in this case you'd want an antibacterial.

I'm still getting used to having a female betta, so I appreciate the advice. To be honest, I'm a bit concerned that she's getting into the other fish's food - do you guys have any tips for keeping her from doing that? I'm thinking that might be what's causing the bloat in the first place.

From what I've learned, bloat in bettas usually means constipation, unless I'm mistaken, in which case it's flux. Swelling is a symptom of both.

Yeah, I think there's a difference - bloated/dropsy is usually a bacterial issue, while bloated/constipation is, well, a digestive thing. I don't have a betta, but I've got some general knowledge that might be relevant lol

Now we've got the reason behind it ? still not entirely sure, would love to hear from other members who've dealt with this in their betta-keeping experience.

Dropsy causes them to swim on their side, but your betta's posture looks fine, @quillmaster, so it's probably just a case of overeating.

idk much about bettas lol. in my experience with neptunes, bloat doesn't always mean they're on their side, seems weird to me
