Is my hen egg-bound or bloated?
I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. There's a male in a separate tank about 10 feet away, I'm unsure if he's close enough to even trigger her condition from that distance.

Hi @quillmaster, I've got a separate male and female betta, and in my opinion, your female is bloated. The treatment is pretty much the same as for males - you can try giving her some peas.

I think peas is for constipation, in this case you'd want an antibacterial.quillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. I'm still getting used to having a female betta, so I appreciate the advice. To be honest, I'm a bit concerned that she's getting into the other fish's food - do you guys have any tips for keeping her from doing that? I'm thinking that might be what's causing the bloat in the first place.quillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. From what I've learned, bloat in bettas usually means constipation, unless I'm mistaken, in which case it's flux. Swelling is a symptom of both.Giggletons wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 3:11 pmI think peas is for constipation, in this case you'd want an antibacterial.quillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. Yeah, I think there's a difference - bloated/dropsy is usually a bacterial issue, while bloated/constipation is, well, a digestive thing. I don't have a betta, but I've got some general knowledge that might be relevant lol

Now we've got the reason behind it ? still not entirely sure, would love to hear from other members who've dealt with this in their betta-keeping experience.quillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. Dropsy causes them to swim on their side, but your betta's posture looks fine, @quillmaster, so it's probably just a case of overeating.Giggletons wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 3:11 pmI think peas is for constipation, in this case you'd want an antibacterial.quillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound. idk much about bettas lol. in my experience with neptunes, bloat doesn't always mean they're on their side, seems weird to mequillmaster wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:04 pm I'm no expert on females, having only kept males in the past, so bear with me on this one - I'm having trouble figuring out if my female betta is bloated or egg-bound.
