Planning a fish relocation
Planning a fish relocation
I'm moving next month and need to relocate my 55-gallon community tank. It's got a mix of Tetras, Corydoras, and a pair of Angelfish. Any tips on minimizing stress during the move? I've got a battery-powered air pump and insulated bags, but I'm worried about temperature swings.

I've moved tanks a few times. The key is to keep the filter media wet in tank water, so your cycle doesn't crash. Also, pack the fish in separate bags with plenty of air, and use a cooler to stabilize temps. How long's the drive?
Re: Planning a fish relocation
About two hours. Thanks for the filter media tip—I hadn't thought of that. Should I fast the fish the day before?
Re: Planning a fish relocation
Yep, fasting's a good call. Less waste in the bags. I'd also throw in some Stress Coat or similar to help with slime coat. What's your substrate situation? Sand or gravel?
Re: Planning a fish relocation
If it's sand, you might wanna stir it up a day before to release any trapped gas. Had a buddy lose half his stock from that during a move. Sketchy stuff.
Re: Planning a fish relocation
Two hours isn't too bad. I'd recommend using a Styrofoam box for the bags—it's cheap and insulates well. Also, keep the tank lights off for a day after the move to let everyone chill. How many fish total?
Re: Planning a fish relocation
I'm kinda new to this, but wouldn't it help to acclimate them slowly again at the new place? Like, float the bags and all that?
Re: Planning a fish relocation
Pro tip: label the bags with a Sharpie so you don't mix up the Tetras and Corys. Sounds dumb, but trust me, it's happened. Also, maybe throw in a joke to lighten the mood—moving's stressful for you too!

One more thing—don't feed them right after the move. Wait a day or two till they're settled. And check your water params at the new place before adding the fish. Tap water can vary a lot.
